Ather is rolling out the Pothole+ Alerts feature via an OTA (over-the-air) update — no trip to the service centre, no waiting, it just shows up on your scooter. The update is headed to Gen 2 and above scooters, which means if you’re riding an Ather 450X, 450 Apex, or Rizta Z, this is coming your way.
The feature essentially uses real-world data — collected from the fleet of Ather scooters already on the road — to map out pothole-prone stretches and then alert the rider before they hit those sections. Think of it as crowd-sourced road intelligence baked right into your dashboard. The more Athers on the road, the smarter and more accurate the system gets over time.
India has one of the most chaotic road networks in the world. Freshly laid tarmac in October can look like a warzone by March after one monsoon season. Potholes aren’t just annoying — they’re genuinely dangerous. They’ve caused tyre blowouts, handlebar jerks, and more than a few nasty spills, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas.
For city commuters who clock 30–60 km a day on the same routes, this might feel like a nice-to-have. But for anyone who regularly rides in new neighbourhoods, on highway access roads, or through poorly-lit suburban stretches, advance pothole warnings could actually prevent accidents. That’s not a small thing.
It also signals where the EV software game is heading. Ather has always leaned hard into the connected scooter angle, and Pothole+ is a clear example of using fleet telemetry for something genuinely rider-centric rather than just brand analytics.
One of the underrated advantages of modern electric two-wheelers is the ability to push meaningful improvements without asking customers to come in for a service. Ather has been doing this better than most — adding features, refining ride modes, tweaking performance maps — all without a workshop visit.
Pothole+ is another notch in that belt. You bought a scooter six months ago, and today it wakes up smarter. That’s a fundamentally different ownership experience compared to traditional ICE vehicles, and it’s one that legacy manufacturers are going to have to catch up with fast.
The system’s accuracy will naturally improve as more data gets collected, so early adopters may find it more useful in metro areas where Ather’s fleet density is higher. Smaller cities and rural routes might take a little longer to get comprehensive coverage. Also, no alert system replaces active, alert riding — treat it as a heads-up tool, not a substitute for eyes-on-the-road awareness.
Still, this is a smart move from Ather, and the kind of practical feature that makes you think: why didn’t someone do this sooner?
