Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has finally put a number to something riders across India have been grumbling about at fuel pumps for a while now. In a written reply to Parliament, Gadkari confirmed that E20 flex fuel — petrol blended with 20% ethanol — can knock your vehicle’s mileage down by anywhere between 2% and 6%, depending on the engine. He also clarified that no evidence of engine failure linked to E20 has surfaced so far.
That’s the official word. Now let’s talk about what it actually means if you’re the one riding.
Why Does Ethanol Hurt Mileage?
Ethanol carries less energy per litre than pure petrol. It’s basic chemistry — E20 has roughly 6-7% less energy density than E0 (pure petrol). So your engine has to burn more fuel to produce the same power output. The result? Your tank doesn’t take you as far as it used to. On a 500cc tourer averaging 30 km/l, a 6% drop means you’re suddenly looking at around 28.2 km/l. Doesn’t sound dramatic until you’re 40 km from the nearest pump in the middle of Spiti.
How Bad Is 2–6% Really?
For city commuters filling up every few days, it’s annoying but manageable — maybe a few extra hundred rupees a month. But for long-distance riders doing highway runs or mountain expeditions, that range hit genuinely matters. Planning fuel stops on remote routes already has zero margin for error. A 5-6% mileage drop on a loaded motorcycle with a 15-litre tank could cost you 15–20 km of range per fill. On a route like Manali to Sarchu, that’s not trivial.
Which Bikes Are Most Affected?
Older carbureted motorcycles tend to feel the pinch more because they aren’t calibrated to compensate for fuel composition changes. Modern fuel-injected bikes with adaptive ECUs handle E20 better — the system adjusts fuelling maps in real time. If you’re riding something from the early 2010s or older, you might sit closer to that 6% end of the range. Newer bikes from Royal Enfield, Bajaj, Hero, and TVS that are E20-compatible by design should stay nearer the 2% end.
Engine Damage — Should You Worry?
Gadkari’s reply specifically noted no evidence of engine failure due to E20. That’s reassuring, and it tracks with global experience — ethanol blends up to E20 are used widely in Brazil and parts of the US without widespread mechanical catastrophe. That said, older rubber seals, fuel lines, and carburettor components in pre-2010 bikes weren’t designed with ethanol in mind. If your motorcycle is vintage or recently restored, it’s worth checking with a mechanic before assuming everything’s fine.
What Riders Should Do Right Now
First, check whether your bike is officially E20 compatible — most manufacturers have published lists. Second, recalibrate your mental range calculator. If you’ve been riding the same route for years trusting a certain mileage figure, shave a few percent off that number going forward. Third, on long rides — especially to high-altitude destinations where fuel availability is already patchy — plan conservatively. Carry a small fuel bladder or know exactly where the next pump is.
The ethanol blending programme isn’t going away. India is pushing towards E20 nationwide and eventually eyeing E100 flex fuel down the line. Riders who adapt their planning now will stay ahead of the curve — and ahead of running dry on a lonely mountain road.
